The Alexander Technique
What is the Alexander Technique?

Fundamentally, the Alexander Technique is a method for “unlearning” the persistent bad habits of coordination which impinge on your health and affect the way you react to life’s stimuli.   It teaches you to reduce unnecessary tension and to move with balance and coordination. More importantly, by learning to improve how you use your body, you also learn to improve how you use your mind. This deeper self-knowledge becomes a tool that lets you play a greater part in actively and consciously recovering from injury, maintaining health, improving posture, learning new skills, aging gracefully, and achieving a deeper sense of well-being.
As an Alexander Teacher, I will guide you through techniques proven to reduce chronic and acute pain, while promoting recovery from stress and its related ailments. I can assist you in streamlining your daily activities so that these tasks are less stressful on your body and therefore more enjoyable. During each individualized session you will find yourself experiencing active expansion and increased availability of movement.
What are some of the problems addressed through lessons in the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique can address physical problems of pain, discomfort, stiffness as well as assist with balance and coordination. It is an excellent choice for those diagnosed with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease or multiple sclerosis.
Because our emotional states are mirrored in physical postures, the Alexander Technique has been helpful in addressing certain emotional concerns.   With the technique, students can learn to become aware of what their bodies are doing: whether pulling down, up or in; or whether they are pushing forwards to go faster or to take hold of things or situations.   This awareness can help students learn new patterns of using their bodies which then can lead to new emotional states.
Many people use the Technique to help them resolve strain and tension resulting from workplace stress or repetitive use injuries. In addition, the Alexander Technique has been used to improve breathing and voice problems helpful to both singers and actors. Musicians often find much relief in holding their instruments with more ease from learning some of the basic principles of the Technique.
The Alexander Technique teaches an individual a whole new way of relating to herself. To learn to be aware of how we move in the world, and to be able to change that to a more efficient and relaxed manner, gives us real choice of what we do and how we do it. With self-awareness also comes self-reliance, self-control and thereby increased inner strength. For those who are drawn to self-discovery, this can be an immense path of life-long learning & creativity.

Should I choose the Alexander Technique or therapy?

The Alexander Technique is separate from the therapy experience and as such, is not included as part of therapy. You may contact me to determine which service best meets your needs.
